Nature, on the surface, is pretty

Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins, as in art, with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language.
    - Aldo Leopold, Sand County Almanac

. . . . . . .

Pretty art versus
Art that goes deep, deep
Challenging art
Picasso art
Art that changed art.

Nature is pretty, nature is simple on the surface
Complex and even scary down deep
Life eating life.

Nature is shaped by a sad reality—
If the slow and stupid on balance
Survived to reproduce
And the strong and smart perished
If those that were highly adaptable, on balance
Perished before reproducing
And those unable to adapt, on balance
Reproduced
Nature would be much less beautiful
And more tragic.
    - Roderick MacIver
